The Lovely Bones – Alice Sebold – Book Review

A thoughtful book that makes us look deeper into our feelings of loss.

The Lovely Bones is a chilling story of Susie Salmon, her tragic death, and her brave afterlife.

Susie Salmon is walking home from school, something she has done safely more than once, when she is lured to her assault and death.

Susie guides us through her chilling murder while she watches over her family and friends from Heaven trying to cope with her death on earth, all the while willing those on earth to find her killer.  As a reader, I found myself on the edge of my seat, cheering for her family to look a little further and find the killer still among them.

A gripping tale of tragedy, Sebold keeps readers entangled in journey for comfort both in Heaven and on earth, leaves us feeling sympathetic for the family and the need for revenge against the murderer.

Though some of the details are hard to read and brought me WAY out of my comfort zone, this is a compelling book to read.

Worth the read – 3½ Stars

  1. One of my favorites! I wasn’t too impressed with the movie though. And I believe the book got bad critical reviews … But what do I know?! I was pulled into it, and couldn’t put it down.
